Full Review

Coming from the same company that made the superlative Ibanez Tubescreamer, you’d expect the Maxon CP101 to be a real contender and certainly, when it came to the test, we had no complaints.

Even at minimal settings, like any decent compressor should, the Maxon CP101 Compressor thickened out guitar tone nicely and managed to remove some of those weird noises that happen when you hit a string by mistake. On the other hand, the effect lifted pinch harmonics out of the mix and added sustain across the board. Refreshingly, with both dials around 12 o’clock, tone flattened out nicely without that annoying squish you can get with lower quality pedals.

At higher levels, for example, with the sustain knob set around ‘9’ and the level maxed out, there’s a nice bit of gain boost to be had, with little added noise. Having said that, overall, the Maxon is a subtle beast. I found it gave FX further down the daisy chain a bit of a lift. A Wah pedal, for example, was much more balanced and brighter.

All in all, the Maxon CP101 Compressor was a good all-round performer. Certainly, for those on a lower budget, this stompbox makes an excellent alternative to a Keeley Compressor.
